|A fabulous night was witnessed by those who attended the Orkney Sports Awards. In the past ten years Orkney sports have come on in leaps and bounds and in no small measure due to the committed work of teams of volunteers. And it is quite right the folk who give up their time to further their sport are recognised in an event such as the Orkney Sports Awards.|
The first outing for the newly formed Orkney Ladies Rugby team was waited for with great anticipation not just by the lasses but also the fans of Orkney Rugby Club with the majority staying on after the mens game to support the ladies. And no greater test for your first game than against Shetland Ladies and in the end they proved too strong. It was always going to be a toughie but the Orkney lasses where up for the task and took no passengers,Shetland knew they had been in a game that's for sure.Tough tackles where put in the communications between the forwards and the backs was loud and clear.|
For me at least the Orkney Ladies excelled at off loading the ball when they where tackled. As soon as they where tackled the Orkney player was looking to off load and more often than not there was a supporting player. Orkney lasses showed no fear whatsoever carrying the ball in to contact posting it and back up for the next phase. No "buts" about it this was a fantastic display from the girls. No rugby club can say they are complete without having a Ladies team. Orkney Rugby is now a complete modern day club. Very proud of you all.
|Orkney rugby is in good health if the display from the under 14's was anything to go by. Great tackling, linkage between the forwards to the backs, passing and a wee bit of handbags...AH rugby there is no other sport like it!!!!!!!|
|"We're all going to Murrayfield" is the song the under 18's are singing. Yes it's true Orkney Rugby Club's under 18's ARE going to Murrayfield, the jewel in the crowd of Scottish Rugby,to play in the National Bowl final after beating a strong Garnoch side at Picky. Vern Cottor better be watching!!!!!|
